Patrick's Post Game Wrap -
June 25th, 2008
Game Summary
The Alumni of FarmHouse Fraternity once again battled the active chapter Sunday night in what has become an ongoing tradition of brotherhood. In keeping with that tradition, the heavily favored alumni again emerged victorious with a 26-9 win.
Alumni pitcher Gary Schmiesing served up another gem from the mound as the FH actives struck out more times than Busch Daddy at bar close. The bullpen also did it’s job as closer Tim Sullivan came in and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh. The pitches that Sullivan threw could only be described as “filthy” as his high arching spinners, rapid-fire pitches, and devastating knuckle balls left the FH active batters thoroughly confused.
Recent alumni TJ Brown and Kevin Kruize provided some much needed youth to an alumni team in which every other player would have qualified for a 35 and over team. The average age of the team was further lowered when child prodigy Jonah Mayo entered the game at catcher and later took command of right field. Representing the “next” generation of FarmHousers, both Ben (13) and Jonah (12) Mayo handled themselves well at the plate down the stretch.
Due to a recent road construction project, left field was shortened by about 20 feet; a fact that Kevin Kruize took full advantage of as he lifted a three-run shot to left that cleared the left-center fielder’s head, the fence, and a backhoe. Tim Sullivan demonstrated the legendary “rage” that he was known for throughout his career as he slammed a triple off the right field fence. A fielding error on the same play allowed him to round the bases and score. Tim later dedicated that hit to his favorite singer/performer and source of his inspiration, Bette Midler.
Rob “the Rocketman” Moline demonstrated the importance he placed on this game by leading the way offensively for the alumni, going 4 for 4 at the plate and apparently using up all of his good hits for the season in one game. Moline was also involved in a controversial running error. Apparently still traumatized from a recent slide at home plate the Wednesday before (he was still wearing a Dora the Explorer bandage on his knee at the game), Moline failed to follow the directions of his third base coach and stayed on third rather than advancing to home. In an effort to solve this problem, the team is rumored to be pursuing Gail Moline as a third base coach, as we all know that Rob follows directions coming from Gail without question.
Key Stat
The FarmHouse alumni are 4-0 vs. the actives when no alumnus breaks their arm.
Editor’s Note:
Special thanks to alumni Dan O’Connor who did a great job of umpiring the game. Also congratulations to Barry Visser who placed first in the poker tournament following the game.
Finally, the title “Age Before Beauty” certainly seemed appropriate this week as Schmiesing and Sullivan, who rode to the game together, apparently made a stop at the ugly store along the way. Schmiesing showed up wearing a ponytail in his hair and sporting a large “Republican” sticker across his belly, which was obviously worn in protest to his favorite presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton not receiving the Democratic Nomination. Not to be outdone, Sullivan arrived sporting a pair of green and white Zubas shorts and legs that obviously had not seen the sun since Reagan was in office. Yikes!
